Sand tray therapy on communication between mother-child dyad in divorced family

Abstract
This study aimed at examining whether sand tray therapy improves a communication in the mother-child dyad in divorced family. The subject of this study was a dyad consisting of a single mother and her elementary school child living in M single mother family shelter in the city of D, who had been referred to this study by a social worker due to problems in communication in the mother-child dyad. The program focused on understanding the changes in the family structure, management of the emotions regarding divorce, understanding the concept of divorce, problem solving, and understanding the permanence of divorce through open conversations in the mother-child dyad, and was conducted once a week, for 10 sessions, each 50 minutes long. To examine the changes of communication in the mother-child in divorced family, The score of comparing the Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory (PACI) before and after program between parents and child was used. In addition, each session using the communication observation criteria was qualitatively analyzed the changes in the verbal and non-verbal expressions in divorced mother-child dyad in the second research. The results are as follows. Firstly, the sand tray therapy enhanced the communication in the mother-child dyad. In the parent-child communication scale, the functional communications increased for both parent and child, and dysfunctional communications decreased. Secondly, sand tray therapy changed the verbal and non-verbal expressions of the divorced mother-child unit. Functional communications in the child and mother increased, and dysfunctional communications decreased with the progress of the sessions. Though this study is a single case experimental research, which might have limitations in generalizing, it can be seen that sand tray therapy works effectively on enhancing communication in the mother-child dyad in divorced family.
